DINITROGEN PENTOXIDE (N2O5)
N2O5 Dinitrogen pentoxide (or anhydride of Nitric acid) is foreseen to be the nitration medium of the future and a precursor for various nitration products such as propellants, energetic materials, plasticizers etc. Dinitrogen pentoxide is a higher purity and higher specificity nitrating agent which give rise to whole family of new reactions. Dinitrogen pentoxide in anhydrous nitric acid provides nitrolysis at lower temperature and hence suitable for heat and water sensitive substrates. Also environmental problem of disposal of spent acid as with mixed acid system is overcome. |

Process | |
A mixture of anhydrous nitric acid (100% which can be produced by azeotropic distillation) and N2O4 (anolyte) is electrolyzed in divided cells where the anhydrous nitric acid is the catholyte. | |
